This Homemade Fajita Seasoning uses simple pantry ingredients and is better than store-bought. There’s no sugar or other additives and preservatives, so this fajita mix is clean eating, gluten-free, Whole30, Paleo, and Keto-friendly.
Years ago, when I went to the grocery store, I’d pick up a few packets of fajita seasoning mix. After I started to eat clean, I’d purchase what I thought was a healthier brand – I’d never thought to make fajita seasoning mix at home.
But then I read the label, and even the healthier brands included additives and preservatives. And now that I have a gluten allergy, I need to be extra careful, so I make all seasonings homemade, including fajita seasoning spice blend.
This fajita spice mix is delicious and perfect to have on hand to quickly make these easy steak fajitas, sheet pan steak fajitas, crockpot steak fajitas, crockpot chicken fajitas, or sheet pan chicken fajitas.

How to Make Homemade Fajita Seasoning
Don’t blink because this seasoning comes together quickly.
- In a small bowl, stir together all of the spices.
- Tightly place the lid on a store in the cupboard or pantry.
- You can easily double or triple this recipe.
Cooking Tips
- Use two tablespoons of fajita seasoning for 1lb of chicken breast, steak, or shrimp. You can also sprinkle some on the sliced pepper and onion as they are cooking.
- Use as a marinade by mixing the seasoning with a tablespoon of olive oil and then massage into chicken or steak and let it sit overnight in the refrigerator.
- Freshen the fajitas up with lime juice and cilantro. Authentic fajitas have a citrus component which is why you’ll see citric acid in store-bought fajita seasoning packets—squirting fresh lime juice after the meat cooks do the trick. I also like sprinkling on fresh cilantro for another layer of fresh flavor.
- Adjust the spice levels. If you prefer a milder fajita seasoning, leave the cayenne out or add more to a spicier flavor.
- Swap in smoked paprika to give the fajita seasoning an extra smokey flavor. Or add a little bit of chipotle chili powder, which offers a bold smokey flavor as well as some heat.
- Salt at the end. The seasoning mix includes salt, but a little extra salt after the protein cooks gives an extra pop to the flavors.
Supplies
- Small mixing bowl
- Seasoning containers or small mason jars with lids.
Storage tips
Place the seasoning into an airtight glass container and store it in the pantry. Starting with fresh spices, this seasoning can last up to a year.
Faqs
Taco and fajita seasoning are very similar, and you can use them without anyone noticing. However, there are some differences between the two.
Fajita seasoning has intense flavors, but it’s not as spicy as taco seasoning. It also includes a citrus component that, with homemade seasoning, comes from lime juice after you prepare the fajitas.
Taco seasoning typically has bolder, spicier flavors. But, both are very similar in taste, and you can use them interchangeably. You can also adjust the flavors and spice levels of the seasonings based on your preference and what’s in your pantry.
Fajita seasonings are used on chicken or steak strips or with shrimp. Cornstarch will help the fajita sauce thicken and still to the proteins better.
However, it’s unnecessary and not included in this fajita seasoning recipe.
