Sun Basket Pricing
How much does Sunbasket cost a week? Sun Basket does cost a little more than the other meal kit companies because, as I pointed out, they use high-quality, mostly organic, ingredients.
Prices start at $8.99 per serving. However, the total cost depends on the meal plan, type of meal (kit or premade), and the number of servings. You can view all the prices here.
Is it easy to make changes to my order or skip a week?
Yes, it is straightforward when you want to make changes or skip weeks.

What I like
- They recently lowered their prices to make healthy eating affordable. Meals are starting at $8.99 which is $2.00 less than it was.
- Paleo, Vegetarian, Clean Eating, Vegan, and Gluten-free options are available. If you have these dietary restrictions or prefer that eating style, these meal plans can be helpful.
- Eleven different meal plans and 15-18 total recipes to choose from each week. However, you can choose from the other meal plans if you see something more appealing.
- There’s more customization than other meal kit companies. You can choose between 2 – 16 servings per recipe. If you want more of one recipe and less of another, this is a great option.
- Recipes are easy to make and very tasty. Since using Sun Basket, and other companies, I’ve learned a ton about cooking different cuisines. I feel like I’ve been pushed out of my comfort zone to cook foods I probably wouldn’t make independently.
- High-quality ingredients that are mostly organic and NON-GMO. Most of the produce sent in the meal kits are organic, but there is an extra cost for organic meats and seafood.
- Upgrades for meats and seafood. I prefer organic meats and like having that option.
- Packaging was sturdy and recyclable. Meals kits are in paper bags, and all the perishables are underneath ice packs in the box.
- Offers ready meals and pre-prepped ingredients for easy weeknight dinners. These work great for busy people and families.
- A large variety of addons for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Choose from oatmeal, salads, energy bars, egg bites, green juices, and more.
What I don’t like
- Recipes are tasty but on the eclectic side. They do provide some “family-friendly” meals, but you’ll see a lot of diverse recipes that you may or may not be used to for the most part.
- A little too much variety. Even though the variety of items is excellent, I think this could be a little overwhelming if you’re unsure where to start or what to buy.
- Organic meats and seafood are an extra cost. I’m used to paying more for organic meats, so I don’t see this as a significant concern. However, I know many people think meal kits are priced high enough, and the price should include organic meats. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, and you’ll need to pay for organic meat.
- Shipping’s not included. Each box is subject to a $7.99 shipping fee plus tax, depending on zip code.
- There’s a lot of packaging. Even though most of it is recyclable, it takes up a lot of space in the recycling bin.
Who it’s good for?
- Someone who wants to start eating healthy, or is already, and appreciates the convenience of healthful meals getting delivered to their door.
- Someone who follows a specialty diet such as Paleo, Vegan, or Gluten-free.
- Someone who doesn’t mind paying extra for healthy and convenient.
- Someone who likes trying new cuisines.
Who it isn’t good for?
- Someone who doesn’t see the value in paying extra for having healthy meals or food delivered to their door.
- Someone who prefers to bargain shop for food and ingredients.
- Someone who is a picky eater and doesn’t like trying new cuisines.
Sun Basket Meals
In my recent box, these are the meals and extras I received:
New Mexican Fajitas with Bell Pepper and Onion
- I paid for organic chicken strips because I prefer organic meats.
- Again, the recipe was simple to make; it would be perfect for a quick weeknight dinner.
- The chicken was cut into strips, which shaved about 10 minutes off the cooking time.
- The sauces were delicious, and the vegetables were fresh.
- The corn tortillas had great flavor.
- Out of all the Sun Basket meals I’ve tried, this one is the most family-friendly. I would order this again.
Garlic Shrimp with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce and Garlic Feta toasts
- I paid extra for jumbo shrimp.
- The shrimp were very fresh.
- The sauce was pre-prepped and which helped bring the recipe together in about 15 minutes.
- The flavor was delicious!
- I would order this again.
Chicken Piccata with Kale and Whole Wheat Penne.
- I paid for organic chicken strips.
- The chicken was cut into strips, and the kale was pre-chopped, which brought this recipe together lightning fast.
- This recipe was delicious and one of my favorite Sun Basket recipes to date. My husband thought it was “awesome.” If you get a chance to order this recipe, do it.
The extras I purchase were:
- Apple Cinnamon Overnight Oats
- Ramen Bowl
- Turkey Jerky
- Green Juice
- Gluten-free crackers
- Hunks chocolate-covered almonds
- Protein bars
- Hummus
- Naan Bread
All the extras were packaged nicely. It was very convenient to shop for all my snacks, lunches, breakfast, and some pantry items when order our dinners.
I can see how this can be helpful for busy people who are trying to eat healthy meals.
Since this box, I’ve ordered extras every time.
Overall, I think Sun Basket is a top-notch meal delivery service. From their website, to recipes, to the quality of ingredients, to all of their new items, to the care they take in packaging, it’s clear they believe and stand by their goal to make healthy food easy.

Hi Kelly, I tried Sun Basket. So far I received 2 boxes and both boxes had rotten vegetables and seafood in them. I was really looking forward to the plan as the descriptions meet my diet needs. However, I was very disappointed (to say the least) with the quality of the food received. In my last box, I received inedible tuna that smelled old and fishy, a rotten cucumber, a rotten tomato, and 3 rotten radishes. When you call to complain, they will only refund 1 meal even though ingredients from each meal had rotten and inedible items. Very disappointed. Cancelled my subscription.
Tammy Kresge says
I’m really sorry you had that experience. Thankfully, I never had to deal with that but I can understand your frustration. Have you tried Green Chef or any other meal kit service?
Lynne says
I’ve been using Sunbasket for almost a year now. It seems to me that if you are ordering a Vegan or vegetarian option it should cost less, as there is no meat (which you can add for an extra charge). Organic meat is an upcharge. I have, on numerous occasions had delivery issues – mostly the fault of the shipping company. More frequently lately, though, the ingredients have been spoiled or wilted beyond use. I had black, slimy basil in the same order where both packages of chicken were spoiled within 2 days of receiving them. Every time I’ve contacted customer service they issue me credit to compensate for the spoiled items, but when you’re trying to cook it’s disappointing not to have all the ingredients you need. I have also found the flavors are often bland, but usually the volume of food is alot. I’ve been thinking about trying a different meal delivery – just to see how they compare. Sunbasket was first venture into meal delivery – I picked them for the organic ingredients, but as someone else mentioned – only the produce is organic, you pay extra for organic meat (which I don’t remember seeing until I was picking my meals.
Tammy Kresge says
I’m so sorry you had that experience. I’ve been a customer for well over a year now and never had that experience. I hope it can be resolved for you.
Jody Miller says
I did not see any mention about prep time of ingredients ie onion, garlic, etc. Or do the meals come
already assembled? Please advise.
Tamara Ann Partridge says
Are you able to see on their website the nutritional information of each meal before you order it?
Tammy Kresge says
Yes all of the nutritional info is available prior to ordering.
Tammy Kresge says
Wow, I NEVER had that happen. Not even close. Every box I’ve received has been fresh. Sorry that happened.

As a meal delivery subscriber, this article was excellent! I particularly liked your opinion on the ‘lazy’ criticism regarding meal order programs. I agreed wholeheartedly with your thoughts re:this debate. Personally, in addition to your pro’s for the service, here are mine: 1). This service actually ends up helping me stay on budget because I don’t ‘impulse shop’ in store. 2). Broadens my cooking recipe variety. I would never come up with these flavor combinations on my own! 3). Living 45 minutes from a grocery offering these ingredients is a haul. Delivery is extraordinarily helpful both time and commute-wise. 4). Meal order/delivery programs are such a blessed convenience for those with health/physical issues. Having someone actually do the “shopping” for me is a huge help for physical limitations.
I have tried both Home Chef and Hello Fresh and am now starting a subscription with SunBasket. I love their options for different dietary health requirements. Thank you so much for your informative review!! Great information!
Tammy Kresge says
You’re very welcome! Thanks for adding to it! I agree with all of your thoughts as well.
Wanda Masick says
I am SO appreciative of your review of Sun Basket! I just signed up as I wanted to give it a try and your thorough and objective review convinced me I am making the right choice. My 5 year old self-proclaimed vegetarian has become very finicky about his vegetarian choices and I a going to give them a gift card to Sun Basket for Christmas. Thanks again!
Tammy Kresge says
You’re very welcome! I would love to hear more about what your 5-year old thinks!!
Angela says
I agree as well! I just signed up for SunBasket as well and her thorough review was exactly what I was looking for in my decision making for this service. Hope it works well for you and your little one. Having already tried Hello Fresh and Home Chef, I am super excited to try SunBasket’s many options offered. 😊
Charlotte says
Hello Fresh does not charge for shipping providing you order 3 or more meals per week. The two of us do. I’ve even considered 4 times per week at $80. We’ve been with them for a few months now and all is good. No issues. Web site easy to navigate. Customer service top notch. I’m looking into Sun Basket only because of Paleo, Mediterranean, etc. Different options. Looks interesting. Maybe……
Tammy Kresge says
I agree I do wish Hello Fresh offered more of those options. I think there food is very tasty but for those that want to go low carb it would be a challenge.

Now I know how to make an easy and delicious stir fry, whether this one or another type. It’s so simple and I recently bought different types of sauce to do stir fry with. I love the variation in recipes and that I’m learning how to be an excellent cook! My family has never eaten so well for so affordable a price. I’m a full time attorney/working mom and am able to make time to cook these delicious and exotic meals for my family because they are shipped to my doorstep. I add an extra easy dish to each meal and cook extra meat and make a meal for two easily stretch to feed five. Sunbasket is a change in lifestyle, a healthier more family oriented lifestyle, and my husband and kids think they are eating like Kong’s and queens. They do not even want to go out to eat meals at restaurants anymore because they know the sunbasket food always tastes better. It’s only $80 a week when eating out one meal for my family is around $120 at a restaurant. I have celiacs and am allergic to milk, tree nuts and a few other things. Sunbasket lists about 10-15 amazing meals each month, with allergies noted, and I always have at least 10 options. This is just an incredible service!
Tammy Kresge says
Thanks so much for this comment. I think this service is a great options for working parents. And I do agree if you typically go out to eat then turning to Sun Basket can definitely help you eat better and save money.

I’m from seacoast New England and am Very particular about seafood – only purchase absolute fresh and wild caught from my local fish monger on the day I cook it! Your review on sole and salmon was promising but was it farm raised or wild? Frozen, previously frozen, or frozen at sea?
Lori says
All their seafood is wild caught. When you select a seafood dish they give you options of what type of fish you want. Some selections add additional $ per serving. I have been using Sunbasket for months now and absolutely love it! Well worth the $. I believe the seafood may be shipped frozen. If you go to their website it has all the information.
Tammy Kresge says
They have 18 meals to choose from so you can definitely use SunBasket to for chicken, beef, pork, or even vegetarian meals.
Jenny loeffler says
Not all the ingredients are organic –just the produce.. There is a choice to order organic meats on select recipes.
Martha Gonzalez says
Yes, I recently asked them about that and received this response: “All of our meats and poultry are hormone and antibiotic free. When you upgrade your meat those are organic, grass fed meats.” So, they’re more expensive per box, plus you have to pay for shipping, plus you have to pay to upgrade. Not really worth it for me — i’ll just drive to Wholefoods.
Tammy Kresge says
For some people it’s not worth it, especially if you have access to a Whole Foods or other meat sources. Many people don’t which is why this can still be a great option even if it’s more expensive.
Peter says
Whole foods is not all organic or sustainable or even seasonal for that matter. Far from it. Its a lovely store BUT they market somewhat deceptively. You just gotta kinda use your judgement. Personally I would rather NOT have avocados from Peru even if organic as an example. Sometimes not organic but locally sourced that doesnt require a lot of early harvesting and lots of petrol etc to ship is a better deal for the environment. Gotta think past the stickers.
Mike says
So, I gave both Blue Apron and Sunbasket a try. While Blue Apron is cheaper, I gotta say Sunbasket was worth the extra money. Food was better, more complex tasting. I felt like I was able to learn more complicated dishes/taste, making the cost worth it to me. When I think about the cost, I think of these as classes that teach me how to cook amazing dishes. Yes, they are expensive but still cheaper than a real class. Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts with you all!
Chaz says
We gave Sunbasket a try after having used Blue Apron for quite awhile, off an on. Our experience was the opposite of yours. The Blue Apron ingredients are noticeably superior and much more plentiful. The Sunbasket recipes we have had the misfortune of trying have been uniformly bland and the portions are ridiculously small.
Tiffany says
My experience is the same as Chaz’s… we order vegetarian Sunbasket meals (3 per week) and have found that we are hungry not long after our meal and that a lot of the time we are left feeling really underwhelmed as far as flavor… hot sauce, a salt shaker, and coconut aminos are musts. We had switched from Hello Fresh, which got repetitive after a while and who’s packaging was unjustifiably unsustainable. I have never had any trouble making flavorful vegetarian meals, myself, so I am puzzled as to why our meals from Sunbasket have been so bland so far (James Beard Award winning chef? Hmmm.).
Tammy Kresge says
Thanks so much for your comment. I agree with your experience. I’ve used both quite a few times and I like Sun Basket for the unique meals. It’s taught me a lot about cooking. However, for those that want more American-style cuisine Blue Apron would work better I think. But Sun Basket has a large selection of meals so it’s possible they have something for everyone.
Tonya McGrew says
Does the recipes come on a paper to save for another time and go to the store and buy it?
Tammy Kresge says
Yes it does. You can also print the recipes off their website.
Lisa says
Does the recipe book contain ALL the recipes? Or just the ones for your meal choices?
Tammy Kresge says
All the recipes are included.
Suzanne says
I’ve been using sunbasket for several months, and remain thrilled. I am happy to have the unique recipes and flavors – I love trying new things, and would likely be bored if they stuck to more “classic” recipes. I can do those on my own! I love that we have not yet seen a repeat meal, and that we remain thoroughly impressed many months in. For some reason, I also find these meals have very easy clean up – usually few pans/bowls, and just less mess in general.
Joy says
I can’t seem to find a vegan option with Green Chef or Sun Basket. They only seem to offer vegetarian options now. Is there a way to specify vegan and actually get organic,
plant based meals with no dairy or eggs? Am I limited to Daily Harvest for organic vegan meals? Thank you!
Tammy Kresge says
Right now, given the current situation going on, they are offering limited offerings. So right now they might not have vegan. Purple Carrot is an all vegan meal kit delivery option that could work well for you. Here’s my purple carrot review with a $30 off coupon.
Susan O'Flaherty says
I completely agree. I’m a vegetarian and cook often for my husband and myself. But I find that I get into a rut and am not the most imaginative. This is why I adore Sun Basket. I learn new recipes and the meals are just off-the-charts delicious. So flavorful and healthy. I totally recommend it.
Gerry Furth-Sides says
The SUN BASKET products are the most beautiful, especially the protein. The only change I would do is a mise en place so all the ingredients were ready to go when I needed them. I would also recommend this for anyone who has not cooked before, The home delivery services seem to like the prepare as you go along, which seems to make it 10 times harder.
The dish was white tablecloth a wow gorgeous, tasty and satisfying. I would recommend this product anytime — it also informed me that my estimates of calories are half of what they are in reality.
Kelly says
Thanks for the great review… I’m considering using this service. Can you tell me, what do you do on the off nights for your meals, and what about breakfasts and lunch? Just curious, since this seems so great I’d hate to destroy all my good efforts by eating the wrong things when I can’t eat their meals.
Tammy Kresge says
Hi Kelly, I still meal plan for the week. I simply put in these recipes on the nights we eat them and then plan for the other nights, including breakfast and snacks.
reese says
There are just two adults in our home. If we ordered the family meal would there be enough for leftovers the next night? Perhaps the fresh ingredients do to taste so yummy if they are kept overnight?
Tammy Kresge says
Yes I would definitely think you’d have leftover.
Calee Ferguson says
I totally agree with your assessment of Sun Basket. I’ve tried several, Blue Apron, Peach Dish, Hello Fresh to name a few. However Sun Basket is the one that I’ve really embraced and enjoy the most. The recipes are easy to follow and I have found them to be full of flavor and very tasty. I like that they have now added a Mediterranean option. I’ve also learned many new techniques and improved my own cooking. So for me, Sun Basket is the best!
