This honey mustard chicken marinade is so easy to make, delicious, and perfect for your next barbecue.
Now that grilling season is here I’ve been busy trying out new chicken marinade recipes. I have a whole bunch to share with you but today I want to share this sweet and tangy honey mustard chicken marinade.
If you’re a big honey mustard dressing fan then I think this marinade will quickly become one of your go to recipes. It’s so easy to throw together with ingredients you likely have in your refrigerator and pantry. Also, this honey mustard marinade can be used as a salad dressing and/or dipping sauce. Honestly, it’s so good you may slurp it up with a spoon too. I prepare this during grilling season A LOT but you can also bake the chicken in the marinade. This is a versitale recipe depending on the season and what you’re in the mood for.
What’s in honey mustard chicken marinade?
This recipe uses dijon mustard, honey, olive oil, fresh garlic, onion powder, salt, and pepper. When I want to thin out the marinade I’ll add a little bit of water. That’s it. No weird ingredients or preservatives like you find in many store-bought brands. If you use all organic ingredients then you got yourself a delicious clean honey mustard marinade.
Also, you can play around with the recipe. If you want more of a tang then add more mustard, want a sweeter marinade then add more honey.
Can I use any mustard in honey mustard marinade?
Yes. I’ve seen honey mustard marinades made with all kinds of mustards. Personally, I prefer dijon over the others because it has a spicer taste with a slight wine flavor. I think it goes great in this marinade. However, you can play around with the flavor using other mustards.
How long do I need to marinade chicken for?
You should let chicken marinade in this marinade for at least an hour, preferable a few hours or overnight. In my experience, the best flavor happens when a chicken sits in marinade overnight. Also, I reccomend saving a 1/4 cup or so of the marinade to brush over the chicken after it’s done on the grill.
Can I use any cut of chicken with this marinade?
Yes, of course. Boneless chicken thighs are delicious.
How long should it take to grill chicken breasts?
Of course, depending on the thickness of the chicken grilling time could vary. However, a general rule is about 5-7 minutes on each side over medium-high heat. When the chicken is done it should have an internal temperature of 165°. My advice is to pay attention to the way a chicken breast feels at this temp. It should be slightly firm but not too much. If it still has a lot of bounce, when you press on it slightly, then it’s not done yet. This is helpful when you don’t have a thermometer handy.
Another tip is to let the chicken breasts sit for about 2-3 minutes after you take them off the grill. This keeps all the juices inside of the chicken breast.

Honey Mustard Chicken Marinade Recipe
Step 1: Start with all the marinade ingredients – dijon mustard, olive oil, honey, grated garlic, onion powder, salt, and pepper. This amount can be used for 3-4 chicken breasts. If you need more then this recipe can easily be doubled.
Step 2: Whisk the ingredients together until the marinade is smooth. If you want a thinner marinade then add water 1 tablespoon at a time until you get the desired consistency.
Step 3: Place into a quart size freezer bag, or glass container, to marinade for at least 1 hour. Remember, the longer you can marinate the chicken the better.
Step 4: Place chicken on a hot grill over medium to medium high heat. Cook 5-7 minutes on each side or until internal temperature is 165°. Brush some of the unused marinade over the cooked chicken.
Serve with roasted vegetables or with a salad.

Hi there! How long will this last as a dressing if I keep it in a jar/bottle in the fridge? Excited to make this!

You’ve marinated raw chicken in your marinade. Should you really be spreading it on the cooked chicken? The rules for cutting boards about not using it for anything after cutting raw meat don’t apply here?

In the instructions I state to save a 1/4 cup of the unused marinade to brush on the chicken after it’s cooked. Hope that clarifies.
