This peanut butter green smoothie with bananas is the perfect way to incorporate some protein, greens, and potassium into your breakfast. Best of all —it tastes amazing! Peanut butter and banana is a classic combination that everyone in the household will enjoy.
One of my favorite snacks to eat is a sliced up banana with some peanut butter on the side to eat with it. Yum! I could probably eat that every single day without ever getting sick of it.
The reason I don’t is that it has too many calories to consume just for a snack and it doesn’t fit into my daily calorie count. I try to keep my snacks between 100 – 150 calories and my banana peanut butter snack clocks in easily at over 250 calories.
So I don’t get to eat my favorite snack as much as I want. Which, truth be told, really bummed me out.
However, I could justify eating that many calories for a meal. That’s when it hit me.
I needed to create a smoothie using my two favorite snack ingredients: bananas and peanut butter!
I know I am not the first person to think of this but I felt pretty genius at the time.
Why This Green Smoothie is Absolutely Perfect
I have been drinking green smoothies for a few years now and you guys know I love them. It is such a great way to get in a solid dose of veggies especially when you don’t feel like eating a side of broccoli every night with dinner.
But, I did wonder what kale would taste like mixed up with a banana and peanut butter. For some reason that worried me even though I put kale in all my smoothies.
I decided to test the smoothie with kale despite my worries. I probably could have left it out but I drink smoothies to get my vegetables in so I knew I at least needed to give it a shot.
Well, there was no need to worry! I placed all the ingredients into my Vitamix and within two minutes, I had a super creamy and delicious banana and peanut butter green smoothie.
Of course, the color was green from the kale but the flavor was all banana, peanut butter, and a hint of sweetness from the maple syrup. Delicious and completely satisfied my craving for bananas and peanut butter!
Frequently Asked Questions About Peanut Butter Banana Smoothies
Before I jump into this recipe, I wanted to answer a few questions I received about this delicious peanut butter smoothie.
Do I Have To Use Peanut Butter?
Nope! I used peanut butter because that’s sort of our go-to nut butter in our home but you can actually use any nut butter you like. I bet you this smoothie recipe would taste AMAZING with some almond butter!
You can also swap out the peanut butter for some cashew or sunflower butter.
Should I Use Fresh Or Frozen Bananas In This Smoothie Recipe?
For this recipe, I highly recommend freezing the banana ahead of time. If not, you will have to use a cup or so of ice to get that cold smoothie consistency. I’m not saying the smoothie won’t taste good without the frozen bananas frozen but it just won’t be cold or have a thicker smoothie consistency.
It’s really up to you!
Which Is The Best Blender To Make Smoothies?
When it comes to making my breakfast smoothies, using the best blender possible is a must and makes all the difference!
I’ve been using my Vitamix for years and it’s still going strong. They are incredibly reliable and really blend up this smoothie recipe great!
Depending on what kind of blender you need, I have found that the Vitamix I own fits perfectly in my kitchen and makes the perfect serving every time.
When I purchased my blend, it came with a 20-ounce to-go cup to drink smoothies and a 40-ounce container to blends soups and sauces.
I use those all the time and they do come in handy.

I have a new Vitamix 6300 and this is the first time I have tried adding peanut butter to a smoothie. I didn’t have any almond milk so just used regular low fat milk and used lemon greek low fat yogurt, added 1 tblsp chia seeds that were soaked in water and one scoop protein powder. DELICIOUS! Thank you !

25 wow points… .? That’s impossible

I too love your site and all of the great information! I’m new to PB2 – do you use it 1:1 (so recipe calls for 1T of regular PB and I replace with 1T of PB2)? Also, the recipe above – does it make 4 cups and 2 cups is one serving? I just want to make sure I don’t accidentally double my calories:)! Thanks again for ALL you do!!!

I also bought the powdered peanut butter. Then I bought some chocoalate-flavored egg white protein powder. I used almond milk, baby spinach leaves, frozen banana and some lowfat vanilla yogurt. Then a scoop of protein powder and 1 tbsp of PB powder. No maple syrup. My daughter’s first green smoothie! I made her taste it.

This is my new favorite! It’s very refreshing and satisfying, as well as soothing to my tummy. Thanks!

Have you ever tried using protein powder in smoothies for an extra kick?

Hi,
Has anyone tried freezing these in muffin tins then re-blend later? Wondering how the mile product freezes. J
Suzi says
Have you tried PB2? It reduced calories immensely and it is only 45 calories for 2 TBSP and ingredients are peanuts, real sugar, and salt. (Only 1g of sugar) It has changed my life lol

No I haven’t but I am going to pick some up today. I have heard so much about it.
Sherry says
You can also make your own peanut butter in the Vitamix!

Ok Im new to you site but love it! Your weight loss Advice is so practicle and doable. I’m a little lost on the smoothie recipes…can they all be frozen in their entirety, specifically almond milk, or do you only freeze the fruit and yogurt? Thanks!
Misty Beckwith says
Is there a way to make these ahead of time? The night before maybe? I seriously have NO time in the morning. I am a teacher who has to get my 2 daughters to their separate campuses and then get myself to mine. I really want to try this, but I know I won’t be able to make them that morning.
Also….I heard that you can add doTerra Wild Orange oil and it helps with the taste of kale, spinach, etc… I just ordered some, so once it comes in I will try it and see.
Jen LeBaron says
If you use a regular blender you can make it in a mason jar. A quart size mason jar fits on most blenders. Put all ingredients in the mason jar the night before except the frozen banana. The next morning add the banana, screw on the base of your blender attachments. Turn it upside down and Blend as normal. When it is done your smoothie is already in its own cup.
Danielle says
Just tried this! Used spinach instead of kale. First green smoothie and I was plesantly surprised how good it is 🙂 Will make again
Amy says
Can a blender be used? I do not have a Vitamix and would really like to make this.
Erin says
Just tried it, and really liked it! Didn’t have any maple syrup, but still tasted good to me! Thanks for the recipe.
Tammy says
That is fantastic!
Ale says
Could be spinach instead of kale?
Rachel says
Can you use unsweetened almond milk and almond butter instead?
Sherry says
I don’t see the green in the recipe. Do I just add a handful of kale?
Tammy says
just fixed that. sorry.
Shannon says
The recipe has nothing green listed…? I assume from the post above that you add kale but it isn’t listed in the recipe. We do one similar to this but with spinach and coconut milk. I can’t wait to try this one. I love getting veggies to my kiddos this way, and they love it too!
Tammy says
yes sorry 1 cup kale. Just fixed recipe.
Katey says
Thank you for your awesome site. I found you a few weeks ago and have been trying out all sorts of recipes. I’m wanting to try a green smoothie but am very nervous. Since I had my little boy, one strange taste can put me off a food for a long time! Can you taste the kale at all or is it a light masked taste?
Tammy says
I personally can not taste the kale but I have been making these for awhile. I suggest starting out with a small amount then adding more as you become accustomed to it.
Dana says
I think the kale flavor and texture is a little stronger than spinach. You might try making this with a little spinach first and once you are used to that (which won’t take long, trust me) you can try kale.
T. says
I just made this with spinach instead of Kale and they turned out great!
Deborah says
What gives it the green color? Did you add some spinach or kale? Or is this just the wrong picture?
Tammy says
Just fixed the recipe. 1 cup of kale
